Review Orkla 2023 The salmon season on the Orkla is now over again. The 2023 season was not quite as good as the exceptionally great 2022 vintage. Which was to be expected. However, the final result of the last 2023 season was in line with the good average of recent years. The Orkla was also able to easily keep up with all other well-known rivers (Top 10 Rivers 2023). At the start of the season there were perfect conditions on the Orkla and an exceptional number of salmon were caught in the first 2 days. After that, fishing became more difficult day by day until the first rain came. We had normal water conditions until the beginning of August. It was in August that exceptional, three extreme floods (up to 550 m3 instead of 60 m3) on the Orkla temporarily restricted the fishing. In general, the biting behavior of the salmon was sometimes slow and left something to be desired. Interestingly, most salmon rivers in Norway faced very similar conditions. One of the most frequently cited reasons for the average, and in some places even poor, yields is said to have been the El Niño weather phenomenon. However, the rivers in Trondelag (Trondheimfjord region, Gaula, Orkla, Stjordal etc.) ultimately had a normal season with an average annual result. The number of salmon rising into the Orkla was again very positive (according to the official counting point at Bjorsetdamm). On the subject of humpback salmon, we can report that the Orkla was fortunately spared from the huge runs (Northern Norway). (Only 8 fish in the catch statistics) And now we're looking forward to the upcoming 2024 salmon season, tying our top flies and dreaming of our great catches in the new season Fact’s: A total of 83 salmon with an excellent average weight of 5.69 kilos were caught on our beats. (Orkla general 4.90 kg) Our guests landed 6 dream fish from 10.00 to 13.00 kg. The biggest salmon of the 2023 season on our fishery had a length of 108 cm and a weight of about 13.00 kg). Again over 80% of the salmon we caught were released. A few salmon had to be killed because they were injured by the hooks and bled to death. These fish were delivered by our guests to the local retirement home. These salmon offer a welcome change in the Menu plan for the elderly in the home. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our guests for the exemplary behavior in order to preserve this extraordinary fish. Total registered catches at Orkla 2023: 3‘909 salmon / 19‘072.90 kg. The largest salmon had a length of 122 cm (approx. 18.80 kg). This season, the Orkla is expected to occupy second place in the ranking of all around 400 salmon rivers in Norway again. .... and if one were to compare the size of the river and the number of fishermen in the first place with the modest size of the Orkla ……………. :-)
